Reminder: It’s property tax week

Just a reminder to be on the lookout for your property tax bill in the mail this week.

Property tax payments are due in two installments. The 1st installment is due September 1st with late interest charged beginning October 1st.

Don’t panic when you open your bill! As long as you have escrowed for taxes & insurance you don’t need to pay the tax bill.

How do you know if you’ve escrowed for taxes? Take a look at your monthly mortgage statement. If a portion of your payment says “escrow” you can be certain your tax bill will be paid by your mortgage company.

Still not sure? Give your mortgage company a call to confirm.

Wondering why you get an invoice when you have escrow?
Pursuant to Iowa law, the County Treasurer is required to mail a tax statement to the titleholder of record on all parcels in the County. Third party payers such as mortgage companies or escrow companies request tax statements from the County Treasurer if they are responsible for paying your taxes. If your mortgage/escrow company is required to pay your taxes, you should retain the tax statement sent to you for income tax purposes.
